Waterville Cougars 2019

Principal's Newsletter

October 12, 2020

Dear Families,

October is one of my favorite months in Vermont, and this year has been no exception. The drive out to Waterville every morning is absolutely stunning! Although we had an early turn of foliage this year, it is hanging on quite well. I feel so fortunate to live here because if I didn’t I would most definitely want to visit Vermont this time of year, and as you know traveling anywhere this year comes with lots of rules and regulations.

Speaking of which, please do remember if you are planning on traveling outside of Vermont this fall, to please use the travel websites to determine if you will be traveling to a green zone or not.

Here are the two websites you should visit before you travel:

https://www.healthvermont.gov/response/coronavirus-covid-19/traveling-vermont

https://accd.vermont.gov/covid-19/restart/cross-state-travel

If you do travel to a red zone, please let the school know and follow the quarantine instructions. This is very important for the safety of our students and employees. We do have people in this school that are working very hard to protect loved ones from exposure as I’m sure many of you are doing as well. We need everyone to work together to keep us all safe.

Everything here at school is continuing to go well. We are experiencing a bit of difficulty with our network, so some technology functionality has been a bit affected last week and into this week (which is why this letter is coming out a week late). Our tech team is working literally all hours to get this fixed and everyone back up and running. A huge thank you to the district tech team for all their hard work and families, thank you for your patience!

We had a fun whole school kite flying activity last week as students earned enough PAW points to have this celebration. We are fortunate to have lots of great outside space so we can safely have students outside in different locations. Ms. Stephanie will be having students participate in the democratic process by voting for a school lunch choice one day in November. Students will vote for their menu choice on election day and then we’ll find out which meal is the winner!

If you have not returned the parent/guardian device agreement form, please return that to school as soon as possible. Deb has sent a few back home as there are many pages that need to be filled out and some sections were missed. Thank you for your attention to this.

Some families that originally signed up for a 2 day hybrid schedule have asked if their child can now come 4 days with the change from step II to step III. Hopefully you all received Superintendent Gallagher’s letter this weekend explaining some of the process and protocols for making those decisions. Here at WES, we have a few classrooms that are able to accommodate more learners. As Superintendent Gallagher mentioned, Dylan LaFlam has done an analysis of our spaces to determine what is a safe capacity. What really impacts that is the number of adults that need to be in certain classrooms. Some classrooms require a larger amount of adults to support students than others. Also, as she mentioned, there will be a re-opening task force to look more deeply at how to safely bring more students back into our schools. That task force will be convening soon and I know Superintendent Gallagher will continue to communicate those findings to all families.

Parent conferences will happen virtually this year during the last week of October. Your child’s teacher will be in contact with you (if they haven’t already) to let you know when and how to sign up.

Here are a few dates to keep in your calendar:

Monday, October 12 – Board Meeting 6:00

Friday, October 16 – NO SCHOOL

Saturday, October 17 – Pumpkin Yard/Craft Sale @ Waterville Town Hall 9:00-3:00

Jan Epstein
